Amical

Amical is an open-source AI dictation tool designed to turn spoken words into text across desktop applications. It works by letting users dictate through push-to-talk or hands-free controls, then inserting the transcription into the currently focused app, such as an email composer, chat window, editor, or notes application. Amical supports both local and cloud-based AI processing. Users can download Whisper models to run dictation directly on their devices, enabling offline use and keeping data on their own hardware.

A notable feature is AI formatting, which restructures raw speech differently depending on where the text is being entered. For example, it can format dictation as an email, a short chat message, structured notes, or plain text. Amical also supports automatic language detection, custom vocabulary, snippets for repeated phrases, voice-first notes, and personalization settings for different apps and websites. Its newer Draft feature can generate or rewrite text from spoken instructions before inserting it into another application.

Amical is particularly useful for people who want faster voice-based writing while retaining the option to process speech locally. It currently supports macOS and Windows, with mobile availability developing across iPhone and Android.
