People are worried and curious to know the reason behind Meta’s mass layoff. This statement from Mark Zuckerberg can answer this question.

“We basically have two major cost centers in the company: compute infrastructure and people-oriented things. “If we’re investing more in one area to serve our community, then that means we have less capital to allocate to the other. So that means we do need to take down the size of the company somewhat.”

The Facebook parent has already announced that it will cut off 10% of their global workforce on May 20. Now that the D Day has come, major changes have been made in the manpower:

  • Approximately 8,000 employees got fired.
  • Around 7,000 transferred to AI-focused teams.
  • Almost 6,000 listed roles were eliminated from the hiring plans
  • Almost 20% of the employees are affected overall

Meta is thriving on becoming an AI-first company, projecting capital expenditure of $145 billion in 2026.

Another point to be noted is that over 1000 employees have signed a petition against Meta’s use of ‘mouse and keystroke tracking software,’ which helps train AI systems to mimic human computer behavior. Well, if this software can work at high efficiency, this can be another reason for more layoffs in the future.

Buzz around the beach water person hiring?

The role was listed by West 10, the family office of Zuckerberg, for their trust estate in Kauai, Hawaii. Though commentators said it could have been simply advertised as ‘lifeguard,’ social buzz is seeing a niche billion-dollar slang circulating across social media.

So yes, the Meta CEO is hiring a lifeguard in short. With responsibilities like pool lifeguarding and general water safety. It’s his personal affair, nothing to do with Meta layoffs.

But amid the massive layoff stress there is a sigh of relief as Zuckerberg wrote in the memo reported by Reuters that “I want to be clear that we do not expect other company-wide layoffs this year.”

A heartfelt note by an employee who worked for almost 10 years at Meta has now been laid off.
